This year, NYC BigApps 2013 is expanding its data resource base to help participants create the best possible apps to improve the lives of New Yorkers. Participants now can use three types of eligible data in their submitted apps.
You can pick at least one data set from NYC Open Data or other approved federal, state, city and private data sets and APIs as listed below. You can generate at least one new, original data set through your app. Or you can mix and match any of these approaches.
We will continue to add new eligible data sets or APIs after the competition’s launch. Please check this page frequently for updates.

Include one or more of the below approved data sets or APIs in your submitted app. These data sets and APIs below include NYC Open Data and other public and private data sources approved for competition use due to their relevancy to New York City and/or this year’s BigIssues.
Generate a new, high-quality data set through your submitted app that provides a significant benefit to New York City residents, businesses, visitors, and/or government. Data must be original, verifiable, and directly gathered by the creators or users of the submitted app. The exact data-gathering methodology must also be fully-disclosed. The NYC OpenData platform features over a thousand public data sets from City agencies, Commissions, and Business Improvement Districts (BIDs). The data sets are available in a variety of machine-readable formats, including APIs, making it easier than ever to consume City data. The platform allows you to search for data in a variety of ways and includes metadata to provide helpful context. You can search data sets relevant to each BigIssue by using the following tags in the keyword search: “lifelong learning,” “healthy living,” “cleanweb,” and “jobs and economic mobility.” Please note that these searches may not be exhaustive and that you are welcome to use any data sets you see on NYC OpenData even if not tagged with any of the above labels.

PediaCities is an open data commons of New York City that makes it easier to find, slice and dice vast troves of open data from the City and other sources. PediaCities normalizes data from different sources and serves it up in curated bites, saving the developer valuable time and enabling even cooler data mashups. Check back with PediaCities often - we will be adding new datasets throughout the competition.
New York State's Open Data Portal brings together local, state and federal data in one place. Search the site's datasets by location or subject, or explore featured datasets and the full catalogue.
New York City Metro Transit Authority (MTA) now allows you to use its schedule data for your website, feed reader, or application. MTA provides transit information in the General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) format.
Checkbook NYC 2.0 provides unprecedented access into how New York City spends its nearly $70 billion annual budget. All data present in Checkbook NYC 2.0 is available through the API, except for visualizations. By default API calls will retrieve up to a maximum of 1000 records per call. You can retrieve a fewer number of records by specifying the "max_records" parameter. If you want to retrieve all the records you can make multiple calls by varying the value of the starting record position using the "records_from" parameter. All data is sent and received using XML Formats and should be sent using an HTTP POST request. The API endpoint is http://www.checkbooknyc.com/data-feeds
As a priority Open Government Initiative for President Obama's administration, Data.gov increases the ability of the public to easily find, download, and use datasets that are generated and held by the Federal Government. Data.gov provides descriptions of the Federal datasets (metadata), information about how to access the datasets, and tools that leverage government datasets. The data catalogs will continue to grow as datasets are added. Federal, Executive Branch data are included in the first version of Data.gov.
8coupons is a hub for buying, organizing, and creating deals of all types. The 8coupons API gives developers access to the full feature set of the 8coupons site. 8coupons brings together all the deals from neighborhood restaurants, bars, salons, and stores so users can find the best deals nearby. The API provides methods such as retrieving dealer types, getting deals by location, getting deals by store ID and more. The API uses a RESTful style and responses are formatted in JSON.

Just need a database of places? The Venues Platform allows developers to search for places and access a wealth of information about them, including addresses, popularity, tips, and photos. It's available free and without any user authentication, as long as applications include adequate attribution.

This dataset of publicly funded service sites allows you to build an app to help clients or social service providers search for a Ryan White or HIV Prevention-funded program in New York City by category, borough, or any of the other fields in the dataset.
